The Arvada Community Food Bank is celebrating the 10th birthday of its Feeding the Future Backpack Program with the launch of the Backpack-a-Roo Club. This membership club initiative will support the Food Bank’s Backpack Program in Northern Jefferson County which provides sacks of food to feed 1,700 students and their families at 15 elementary schools and two Head Start programs in Arvada and Wheat Ridge during the weekend. For the price of $10 a month members of the Backpack-a-Roo Club will feed one child every weekend for a full school year!
Although the Colorado economy is recovering, nearly one in four (more than 22,000) children in Jefferson County continue to face food insecurity. This is defined as the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, according to Feeding America’s map the meal gap by county report. Hundreds of volunteers give their time each week to gather, pack and distribute weekend food and snacks for program participants.
