Psst… Exploring the Red Planet

If you are a space geek like me this will definitely pique your interest…

This Sunday, October 25th 2015, and Monday, October 26th 2015, National Geographic will be hosting a special event named: Exploring the Red Planet at the Lone Tree Arts Center.

Exploring the Red Planet will feature NASA Engineer , Kobie Boykins, speaking about his work on the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity that were first deployed in 2004 complete with amazing photos and followed by a 30 minute Q&A!

A dynamic young engineer at NASA‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Kobie Boykins is on the front line of Mars exploration. Boykins designed the solar arrays that power the Mars exploration rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. The solar arrays enabled the rovers to keep going long after their planned 90-day life (indeed, Opportunity is still roaming Mars today and sending back images, more than nine years later).

Now, Boykins is also intimately involved with the latest venture to Mars, as supervisor of the mobility and remote sensing mast teams for the Mars Science Laboratory, better known as Curiosity. Curiosity landed on Mars last August and has already made headlines with evidence that conditions on Mars, including the presence of water, once could have supported life. For work on this and other compelling projects, Boykins last year received a NASA Exceptional Service Medal, one of the highest honors given to NASA employees and contractors.

Boykins’ boundless enthusiasm for unraveling the mysteries of outer space, and Mars in particular, is infectious. Join him for an engaging evening exploring the Red Planet – with an update on the very latest chapter in the ongoing story of Mars exploration.

Exploring the Red Planet

On Oct. 25th the event will take place at 7:30pm and on Oct. 26th the event will take place at 10am.
