What started as a “verbal typo” by a reporter, or perhaps an act of fate, spawned the most anticipated pavilion yet at this year’s Denver County Fair. The Kitten Pavilion is the first of its kind and is replacing the controversial Pot Pavilion that left many fair goers accidentally dosed with marijuana last year. The kittens are expected to bring a different, more family-friendly type of high.
The Denver County Fair has been putting an unconventional twist on a county fair since 2011. They have everything from pavilions for garden vegetables to winning blue ribbons for homemade functional robots. Competitions for sewing, knitting, photography, and painting are sure to impress, all alongside an hourly “freak show.” It’s safe to say this fair is for everyone, including, but not limited to, the internet-cat-loving types.
The Kitten Pavilion will host 15,000 sq. feet of feline awesomeness. With appearances from internet cat star Lil BUB, show cat competitions, and a daily dose of internet cat videos, it’s sure to be this year’s highlight. It’s likely you’ll walk away with cat collectables and other “cat merch.” Here is what’s in store:
Daily Cat Shows
There will be over 200 show cats in competition Saturday – Sunday at the sanctioned TICA Cat show. However, if you think your own cat is show-worthy, the TICA and the Fair staff are collaborating to produce a special open-to-the-public, house cat competition. Just think, your cat could earn a blue ribbon for Fattest House Cat. Now that’s something to brag about!
Daily Screenings of the Internet Cat Video Festival
(Yes, that’s a real thing!)
Just as internet cats are a huge part of our everyday lives, they will be a prominent feature at this year’s Kitten Pavilion. Now touring worldwide, The Internet Cat Video Festival is the first live celebration of cat videos, with about 85 videos selected from thousands of contenders. You’ll see everything from 6-second Vine videos to short cat films, each one with its own set of surprises and adorableness.
Daily Appearances by Lil BUB
As an internet cat star, Lil BUB will humbly make daily appearances and provide opportunities to get your photo taken with her and get a “pawtograph.” BUB is a rescue cat who has battled a series of medical maladies, causing her to stay kitten size forever. With her perma-kitten body and a tongue that always sticks out, it’s no surprise people adore her. Private meet-and-greets and petting sessions will cost an extra $50.00, and the proceeds go toward Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue and Lil BUB’s BUG Fund for Special Needs Pets.
If at the end of any day you can honestly say you’ve had your photo taken with an internet cat star, witnessed a bunch of cats compete for blue ribbons, and watched an unusual amount of cat videos, you can call it a purrrtastic day (and purrrtastic day = life goal).
