The Denver Ear supports contributions to local businesses as well as promoting a healthier and active lifestyle. Therefore, listed are local Denver locations and businesses where you can find Pokémon and play Pokémon Go!
But first, for those of you who have yet to get into the craze some explanations…
What is Pokémon Go?
Pokémon Go is a smart phone app game developed by Niantic and published by The Pokémon Company (Nintendo owns part of the Pokémon company). It’s free to download, but you can purchase Pokécoins via in-app purchases. The Pokécoins allow you to purchase Pokéballs, the in-game item you need to be able to catch Pokémon. Players can also elect to receive Pokéballs by time and energy.
Players capture, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokémon, who appear throughout the real world, visit special gyms and Pokéstops. The augmented-reality syncs with the real world by the smartphone’s GPS and playing the game means getting out of your house to explore the real-world.
How to Play Pokémon
Once you download the app, you first create your own avatar (basically a virtual representation of who you are in reality or you can create an avatar of how you would prefer to look like). After you’ve created your avatar, the game shows you your current location with a map of your immediate surroundings. As you travel the real world, your avatar moves along the game’s map.
Different Pokémon species can be found in different areas around you. When you find a Pokémon, you can decide to use one of your Pokéballs to try to capture it. If you successfully catch the Pokémon, you own it and it gets added to your Pokédex, ( a database of all of your Pokémon). Simply throwing the Pokéball at it doesn’t necessarily mean you will catch it. It all depends on the right force, the right time and the type of Pokéball you decide to use.
Simply walking around searching for Pokémon isn’t the entire purpose of the game, you can also visit your local Pokémon gym, where you can battle other players’ Pokémon, and you can visit Pokéstops, a predetermined landmark, where you can receive items that further your ability to train your Pokémon.
